Liver Transplant

Liver Transplant Treatment

It is widely known that the liver is one of the largest internal organs weighing about 3 pounds and it acts like a storage house by successfully removing toxic byproducts of certain kind of medications. In Liver Transplant operation a diseased liver is replaced with a healthy liver or a segment of a liver from the donor.

Liver failure can occur swiftly or as a consequence of complications from certain medications. Liver transplant is a very successful treatment for end-stage liver disease and very effective in acute liver failure.

The most widespread technique is Orthotopic Transplantation in which the liver is successfully removed and is replaced. The donor organ is placed at the same anatomic location as the original liver was.
After a successful transplant, the patient will be free from the disease and easily lead a normal life.

Following are the types of Liver Transplants

Deceased Donor Liver Transplant (DDLT)

In this type of transplantation the donor is brain dead but heart beating. The full liver is used in this transplantation.

Auxiliary Transplantation

In this type of liver transplantation the liver of a healthy adult donor (living or cadaver) is used. The liver is transplanted into the recipient but the diseased liver remains intact until the auxiliary piece regenerates. After some time it assumes function and then the diseased liver may be removed.

Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT)

In this type of transplantation, donor organ comes from a living donor. A half (or hemi) liver is used in this type of Liver Transplant.
